The 2019 season of On the Green events at the Thetford Riverside has kicked off with glam rock costumes and a baby grand piano.
The series of events was launched with the return of the popular “Friday Night is Music Night”, with the town welcoming Kevin Clay, a London-based Elton John impersonator. The event coincided with the launch of Rocketman film, which is currently being shown at Thetford Riverside’s The Light Cinema, and as part of the celebration a real rocket, kindly on loan from Raptor Aerospace, was on display in the cinema.
Hundreds of people of all ages, including families, turned up to party the night away at the free event. The event, and the upcoming events which form the On The Green programme for the year, are funded by Breckland Council as part of its Market Towns Initiative. The programme of regular events aims to bring together members of the local community, encourage visitors to the town and provide a boost to local businesses.
Friday themed evenings coming up over the coming months include,
- Friday 14th June – Hits from the Musicals – a musical tour of all your favourites with Kayleigh Gare and Gary Winter
- Friday 28th June – Beatles theme
- Friday 12th July – Elvis Open Mic Night
- Friday 19th July – Disney night
- Saturday 27th July – Norfolk Day
- Friday 9th August – Abba night
- Friday 23rd August – Pirate theme
- Friday 6th September – Family fun
- Friday 29th November – Christmas hits
Cllr Mark Robinson, Executive Member for Community, Leisure & Culture at Breckland Council, commented: “The new programme is shaping up to be even bigger than last year’s and it is great so many people attended the first event. There are some great activities planned, so I hope people from the town and visitors to the area will make the most of future events. They’re sure to have great fun and it is a great way to support local businesses at the same time.”
Alex Long, Marketing Manager, The Lively Crew, said: “We are delighted to be given the opportunity to deliver events on the green in 2019 for Breckland Council. Last year’s activity gained a massive local following and Friday night’s attendance suggests the support for such events is set to continue and grow. Over the coming months the mix of music and other activities will give residents a reason to come into town and socialise.”
Aside from the regular fortnightly Friday night music events there will also be some very special events held during weekends and weekdays and will include the return of the beach, the finale of the Norfolk Punjab Festival and a festive offering later in the year. Details are being published on the ‘On the Green Thetford’ facebook page and various local what’s on websites.
