92% of workers who feel there is someone at work who encourages their development plan to stay with their current companies in a years’ time, according to Gallup’s Q12 Employee Engagement Survey. At Plandescil we believe the biggest advocate of their staff’s progression is our Director of Projects, Oliver Jones, evidenced by the fact he won the NCEC’s Future Leader award following a nomination from his colleagues.
Earlier in the year, we applied for Norfolk Constructing Excellence Club’s (NCEC’s) Future Leader and People Development awards. The NCEC is one of 32 Clubs within Constructing Excellence National and one of three in the Eastern region. Their membership is multi discipline with professionals from across the entire built environment sector and welcome all levels from Apprentice to Managing Director. Norfolk Constructing Excellence Club is committed to improving the business performance of its members by focusing on innovation and best practice through collaborative working and supply chain integration.
The awards ceremony took place at OPEN Norwich on Tuesday 14th May. Ten members of our staff attended, from Apprentice to Director level. Unfortunately, we were not successful in winning the People Development award, however, our Director, Olly Jones, was awarded 1st place in the Future Leader category. The NCEC explains that ‘judges are looking for the person that best demonstrates a positive impact on their peers, their organisation and the wider industry’.
Olly’s application for the award was made by his peers at Plandescil who have experienced first-hand his commitment to training staff and championing the Company’s Apprenticeship Scheme. Having started at Plandescil 13 years ago as an Apprentice Technician, Olly undertook his academic and professional qualifications with the Company and in 2016 he became the youngest member of Plandescil’s Board of Directors, namely, the Director of Projects when the Company transferred to Employee Ownership. Olly now manages the engineering workload of a team of 9 whilst also mentoring them through their qualifications. Olly is an excellent role model to our staff, always going the extra mile to ensure that they are benefiting as much as they can from their training and encouraging their career progression. “Having worked closely with Oliver for the past 6 years I cannot stress enough the maturity, leadership and enthusiasm that he shows on a daily basis. At the age of 30, he displays the leadership qualities of someone far greater in age.” This was said of Olly by his colleague, Rhys Williams, who submitted the application.
Staff training has always been an important value of Plandescil’s and we are most pleased to know Olly holds the same passion to carry this on in the future, as the Company is taken forward by the new Board of Directors. Following Olly’s success at the Norfolk Constructing Excellence Awards, he now has the opportunity to apply for the National Constructing Excellence Awards which will be held on the 8th November 2019.
